Restaurant Ads Don't Fail Because of Targeting. They Fail Because Nothing Catches the Click.

Most restaurants blame the audience or the budget when ads don't work. The real leak is almost always what happens after the tap — and it's fixable.

When restaurant ads don't work, the post-mortem is always about the ad. Wrong audience. Wrong radius. Budget too small. Creative not good enough.

It's usually none of those. By day I manage serious paid media budgets across Google and Meta, and the pattern in restaurant accounts is remarkably consistent: the ads are fine. The click is fine. What's waiting on the other side of the click is the problem.

The Leak

Follow the journey your ad actually creates.

Someone local sees it. They're interested — genuinely, that's what the click means. They tap. And they land on your Instagram profile, or your homepage, or a menu PDF.

Then what? There's nothing to do. Nothing to claim, nothing to give, no reason to act right now. So they do the thing everyone does with a mildly interesting thing on their phone: they leave, and they forget.

You just paid for that. Not for a guest, not for a contact — for a moment of interest that evaporated. Run that a thousand times and you've spent real money to generate nothing you can point to.

Traffic Isn't the Product

The reason this is so common is that traffic is the easiest thing to buy and the easiest thing to report. "We got you two thousand clicks" sounds like a result. It isn't one. Clicks are an input.

The output that matters for a restaurant is either a guest walking in, or a contact you can reach again — ideally both. If an ad campaign produces neither, the number of clicks is beside the point.

What Should Be Behind the Click

Something that makes the trade worth it for both sides:

  • A specific offer, worth claiming, that a guest understands in one sentence
  • A way to claim it that takes fifteen seconds and asks for a name, phone, and email
  • An immediate delivery of the offer, so the guest has it in hand while they still care
  • A follow-up that reminds them before it expires, and answers them when they reply

Now the same click produces something durable. Even the guest who doesn't come in this week is on a list you own, reachable for free, forever. Your ad spend stopped renting attention and started buying assets.

This Changes What Ads Are For

With the leak fixed, ads become something better than a tap you hope converts. They become the top of a system: paid attention converts to owned contacts, owned contacts get offers, offers fill the shifts you choose.

The budget question also gets simpler. You're no longer guessing whether "brand awareness" was worth it. You can see how many contacts a given spend produced, and you know what a contact is worth to you, because you know what a returning guest spends.

The Order That Actually Matters

There's a popular idea that restaurants should get their content foundation perfect before running any ads. There's something to it — a dead profile does undercut an ad — but it's the wrong priority, and waiting on it costs restaurants years.

The thing to build first isn't a year of posts. It's the capture step. A restaurant with a modest feed and a working capture system will beat a restaurant with a beautiful feed and no way to collect a phone number, every time, because one of them is compounding an asset and the other is producing content.

Fix what's behind the click first. Then spend.

Before You Raise the Budget

If ads aren't working, don't start by increasing spend or re-cutting the creative. Tap your own ad, as a stranger would, and ask one question:

If I were a hungry local seeing this for the first time, what exactly am I supposed to do right now — and if I do nothing, does this restaurant have any way to reach me again?

If the answer to the second half is no, that's your leak. No amount of budget fixes it, and closing it makes every dollar you've already been spending work harder.
